What is ONE thing I can do to become healthier?
When people ask me this, I always say “Walk.” Walking is good for you for many reasons.
- If you are outside, you get the benefit of fresh air and Vitamin D from the Sun
- Walking is weight bearing which means it improves your lower body bone density
- Walking is often social which means we may do it with a friend, or it can leave us time to our thoughts if we are by ourselves. Both of these help to lower our stress which can lead to less abdominal belly fat (more on this later!).
- Walking is a functional movement – it is something you need to do in your daily life. Practicing it ensure you can continue to do it. (Remember to lightly swing your arms with your opposite leg so you can also practice your Gait Pattern which helps with balance).
- Walking, especially brisk walking, strengthens your heart and works on your cardiovascular system.
- ANY walking is helpful, so if you can’t go outside after work for a big walk, choose the furthest bathroom in your office, park in the last spot at the store, and/or walk around the field while you are watching a game.
