Many people go into the new year with a common goal, to lose weight, get fit, exercise more and so on. However, a lot of people fail to narrow that goal down further, especially with exercise and weight training. What type of shape do you want to be in, what type of training do you want to achieve? The more we slim down a goal to its basic parts the higher are odds are of achieving that goal. Below I’m going to list the most popular types of training with a brief description of the purpose of each of them.
- Strength Training: Pumping iron to build muscle and get stronger. Think bench presses, squats, and deadlifts.
- Cardiovascular Training: Get that heart pumping with activities like running, cycling, or jumping rope. Great for overall fitness.
- HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training): Short bursts of intense exercise followed by brief rest. Efficient and effective for burning calories.
- Flexibility and Mobility Training: Yoga or stretching to keep those joints happy and movements fluid.
- Functional Training: Mimics real-life movements to improve daily activities. Useful stuff like squats, lunges, and core work.
- Endurance Training: Ideal for long-haul fitness, whether it’s running, swimming, or cycling. Build that stamina!
Last but not least my personal favorite, hypertrophic training, is the art of building those swole muscles! It’s like sculpting your body with resistance. This style of training can be a good middle ground for someone who wants to be stronger but also would like their body to look a certain way.
The great thing about fitness is that once a goal is reached, there is no reason you can’t switch styles and try something else out! Many pro lifting athletes will switch between strength training and hypertrophic training depending on their own goals. You never have to feel limited or bored with your fitness. There are also many great and beneficial hybrid programs that combine 2 or more styles of training!
Don’t be shy, get in the gym and try as many as you can! Trying is the only way you will find a style that you truly enjoy. It’s just common sense that if you enjoy a style of training, you will be more likely to stay with that training for a longer period of time!
