The deadlift is one of the most widely known exercises in the fitness community. For those who aren’t familiar with it, the deadlift has many different varieties and is an exercise for your posterior chain as well as your lower and upper back.

Primary benefits of the deadlift include the following:

  1. Building Strength – Using deadlifts in your workout programs will significantly build strength and stability. Whether you’re using a barbell, hex bar, or even a kettlebell, the deadlift will also improve your grip strength. Just think about how many times in a day you bend down to pick something up or need to carry something heavy.
  2. Building Better Posture  – Not only do deadlifts strengthen your back, they also strengthen your overall core, which aids in better posture. In that same regard, performing deadlifts properly will result in standing up straighter as well as helping with shoulders that tend to roll forward – especially for people that sit in front of a computer all day.
  3. Building Overall Muscle  – Deadlifts are a compound exercise that work multiple muscle groups. Instead of going into the gym and sitting down on 3-4 machines, you can work all those same muscles just by doing deadlifts. Since compound exercises are multi-joint (or multi-muscle) exercises, they can save you a lot of time and effort in the gym when trying to build muscle and strength.
  4. Preventing Injury – Building muscle means having more protection around your body. Resistance training also increases bone density. Both factors reduce the chance for injury should an accident occur. Further, deadlifts reduce the chance of falling, the leading cause of injury in older adults, because they strengthen core, posterior chain, and postural muscles.
