As a weight loss tool, fiber is our friend because it doesn’t have any calories and it helps us feel fuller.  In fact, we can’t use it as a source of energy because we literally can’t digest it.  That’s why it “adds bulk” and helps with regular bowel movements.

However, most clients I encounter do not get enough fiber in their diet.  The recommended amount of fiber is 25-38 grams a day for adults.  In 2016, the average fiber intake for an American was only 16 grams.  A word of caution though – too much fiber can cause negative effects.

So where do we get fiber?  It’s only found in plant food because it is what gives plants their structure and shape.  Before you reach for processed foods with added fiber, aim then to increase your plant and “whole food” intake, consuming the peel or skin and pulp of the food as often as possible.

Below is a great article written by NASM with more information, also getting into the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber, both of which we need: https://blog.nasm.org/nutrition/bulk-up-on-fiber-facts-whole-foods/
